Weekly Highlights: Transforming Spaces with Wallpaper

Welcome to this week’s edition of Novus Design’s Weekly Highlights! This Friday, we’re diving into the world of wallpaper, a timeless and versatile design element that has the power to transform any space. Recently, we had the pleasure of working on an exciting project in Zurich, Switzerland, where wallpaper played a pivotal role in revitalizing the interior. Let's explore the magic of wallpaper, its benefits, potential drawbacks, and a detailed look at our Zurich project.

What is Wallpaper?

Wallpaper is a decorative material used to cover and enhance the interior walls of homes, offices, and other buildings. Available in an array of patterns, textures, and colors, wallpaper can be made from various materials, including paper, vinyl, fabric, and more. It’s applied to walls using a special adhesive and can instantly change the ambiance of a room.

How Does Wallpaper Work?

Applying wallpaper involves several steps:

  1. Surface Preparation: Walls must be clean, smooth, and primed to ensure the adhesive sticks properly.

  2. Measuring and Cutting: Wallpaper is measured and cut to fit the dimensions of the wall.

  3. Adhesive Application: A wallpaper paste or adhesive is applied to the back of the wallpaper or directly to the wall, depending on the type of wallpaper.

  4. Hanging: The wallpaper is carefully aligned and smoothed onto the wall, ensuring there are no air bubbles or wrinkles.

  5. Trimming and Finishing: Excess wallpaper is trimmed, and seams are matched for a seamless look.

Benefits of Wallpaper

  1. Versatility: Wallpaper comes in countless designs, colors, and textures, allowing endless customization options.

  2. Durability: High-quality wallpaper is long-lasting and can hide wall imperfections better than paint.

  3. Aesthetic Appeal: Wallpaper can add depth, character, and a unique style to any room.

  4. Easy to Clean: Many wallpapers, especially vinyl types, are easy to clean and maintain.

Potential Disadvantages

  1. Cost: Wallpaper can be more expensive than paint, both in terms of material and installation.

  2. Installation Time: Applying wallpaper is time-consuming and requires precision.

  3. Removal: Removing wallpaper can be challenging and may damage the underlying wall if not done correctly.

  4. Moisture Sensitivity: Some wallpapers are not suitable for high-humidity areas like bathrooms or kitchens.

Project Spotlight: Zurich, Switzerland

Our recent project in Zurich was a perfect showcase of how wallpaper can transform a space. The client wanted to rejuvenate their living room, adding warmth and character without a complete overhaul.

Before: The living room had plain, painted walls that lacked personality. The space felt dull and uninspired.

During: We began by preparing the walls, ensuring they were smooth and ready for the wallpaper application. The selected wallpaper featured a stunning design with intricate patterns and a subtle color palette, adding a touch of elegance to the room.

After: The transformation was remarkable. The wallpaper brought the room to life, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The patterns added depth and interest, making the living room the focal point of the home.

Design Highlight: The chosen wallpaper design was a modern take on a classic floral pattern, combining contemporary colors with timeless motifs. It perfectly complemented the existing furniture and decor, tying the whole room together beautifully.

Conclusion

Wallpaper is a powerful tool in interior design, capable of transforming any space with its unique aesthetic qualities. While it may come with some challenges, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks for many homeowners. Our Zurich project is a testament to the transformative power of wallpaper, and we’re excited to continue exploring its potential in future projects.
